I was asked to take Parker (6 years old) and Peyton (3 years old) to day care this morning, because Kelly was on a trip and Mark had an early morning meeting. OMG, it was the longest morning in the history of mornings. I got up at 5:30 in the A.M. – alright fine, it was more like 5:48. I needed to be at Kelly and Mark’s house a little before 6, because Mark had to leave at 7 at the latest.
I showed up on their doorstep at 6:36. It dawned on me that Mark must be in the shower after there was no response when I rang the doorbell. He confirmed it when he let me in. He went to get ready for work and I lounged around on the couch. Peyton let it be known that she was awake by peering down at me from the landing on the second floor and grunting. She is not a morning person.
Mark gave her a sippy cup filled with chocolate milk and then left at 7. Peyton and I watched a cartoon with a little red headed girl, a talking pig named Hamilton and a spotted “Ferocious Beast”. She was so engrossed that it made me wonder if that’s what I look like when I watch Gossip Girl. After a while we went up to her room to get dressed for the day. We went through the bathroom routine and I helped dress her in the clothes that Kelly had laid out. Of course, the minute I got her into her clothes, she had to “pee”, which then turned into “uh oh, I have to poop too.”
When she was finished, I asked her if she needed help getting cleaned up. Picking up dog poop on a daily basis pretty much desensitizes you to things like that. Peyton said, “No. My mommy told me I had to wipe myself.” That is a good rule. No matter what age you are. She invited me to look into the toilet bowl, but some things should just stay private. Then she showed me how to do a breast exam. She did it correctly too. No lump is going to get passed her. I didn’t ask where she got it from. I don’t think I want to know.
Parker got up shortly there after. He got dressed and I gave him chocolate milk. I let them watch another episode of that talking pig and big spotted dog cartoon, before we all piled into my car. Mark had put Peyton’s car seat in the backseat of my car and I had the hardest time buckling her in. Car seats are not user friendly.
We stopped by the donut shop on the way to day care. They both wanted more chocolate milk. Parker ordered a chocolate frosted donut with sprinkles, a sausage roll and 5 donut holes. Peyton wanted “the pink donut” and a sausage roll. It dawned on me that Kelly and Mark probably don’t let those two eat that much sugar after Parker made the comment – “It’s so cool that I got to order all by myself.” Before we left the donut place, Parker wanted water. So I got him a bottled water. He didn’t want a small bottle either. He wanted the 7.7 ounce bottle with a flip cap. Then Peyton wanted water too, but she did NOT want to share with Parker. Do you know where her water bottle is now? Sitting on my desk as we speak. I’ve been drinking out of it all day.
So we finally get to day care at about 8:45. Parker was clutching his water bottle and Peyton was still eating her pink donut. We took Parker to his class first and I signed him in. Then Peyton had to hug everyone and their dog, before going to her classroom. When we got there, she was most upset that some boy name Steven had hung his backpack on her hook. She was completely scandalized when I moved the bag to another hook, because “that’s Nicholas’ hook!” I told her that Nicholas could move it if he wanted to. She looked doubtful.
Before I left, Peyton handed me her leftover smushed pink donut. She gave me 3 hugs in a row and a kiss, because “that’s all you get” and she pushed me out the door. I had to quickly go back to my place to walk the dogs and feed them breakfast. It was way too early when I left the apartment at 6:30 to walk them. The sun wasn’t out yet and I didn’t want to run into any rabbits. By the time I got to work, it was way past 9.
So anyway, here I am drinking my water and eyeing the leftover pink donut. Don’t ask me why I still have it. I shoved it into the donut bag when I got into the car at the day care and proceeded to take it to work with me. I am exhausted! I think I’m going to go home and hug my mother tonight.
One more comment…My grandkids are Parker(6), Peyton (4), and the newest, Pierce (3 months). Those are my three peas in a pod.
What are the odds that your grandchildren are named Parker and Peyton too?! Congratulations on Pierce!!
Love it!!!! That is why I love being a grandmother. I can give them all the stuff that I NEVER let my own kids have!
