Do you know what Tiger Balm is? Have you ever used Tiger Balm? Tiger Balm is used for “the symptomatic relief of muscular aches and pains, sprains, insect bites, itch and lumbago.” Lumbago is lower back pain by the way. Anyway, I’m pretty sure every Asian household has Tiger Balm.
I have two. I asked my mother to bring me Tiger Balm when she was in Thailand a couple of years ago. She bought me a red and white one. What’s the difference? I’m not sure. I do know that they smell slightly different and I think the white one is more menthol-ly.
There are many uses for Tiger Balm. Like I mentioned above, you can rub it over bruises and insect bites. I smell like Tiger Balm all the time. Not from insect bites mind you, but bruises. I use it on pimples or areas where I feel one coming on. It works. Of course, you don’t want to use too much or you end up drying out that area of your face. I also use it when I’m congested. I put a little under my nose and it helps me breath. Of course, you can also use Vick’s vapo rub for that.
You don’t have to go all the way to Thailand or Asia to get Tiger Balm. I found this little guy at Wal-Mart. It’s not as big as the ones above, but if you really, really want one of those – I’m pretty sure you can find them at the Asian grocery store.
